The World's Most Famous Louisiana Swamp Tour Guide
My husband surprised me with a sunset swamp tour for my birthday in August 2014.
Marcus de la Houssay was an awesome tour guide. We would ride around for a little bit, and he would stop and tell us stories. The tour was far longer than expected. We did not want it to end.
When the sun started setting he made sure to maneuver to some really nice romantic areas so I could get pictures!
When it was dark, he turned on the spotlight and we could see hundreds of eyes staring at us. At one point he grabbed up an alligator for me to take a picture of. It was one of the coolest experiences we have ever had.
We hope to go back and do another tour with him in the future. He does like to talk and tell stories. Some people may be offended by some of them, but he is very informative. Mr de la Houssaye never change who you are! We would have spent the whole weekend out there with you if we could have!
We will book another tour next time we are in the area! ~ Wendy Rich

Thirty Two Years Ago in 1986...
OK, here is a novel idea...
Learn to think for your self and....TURN THE TV OFF!
OK, I know it sounds crazy!
But.... I LIVED ON A HOUSEBOAT IN THE BASIN WITH NO WATER, ELECTRICITY, NO PHONE AND NO TV!
And... IT WAS THE HAPPIEST TIME OF MY LIFE...
And ..... People thought 'I' was crazy... Hmmmm?
I offer no apology for what I am posting, for this is truly how I feel. This is my opinion, not a debate. If you disagree, or find my position offensive, I'm perfectly fine with that. Feel free to unfriend me if we cannot agree to disagree. I wont debate or argue my beliefs.
I have lived through several United States Presidents prior to our current President Trump. In my lifetime, I have never seen nor heard of a President scrutinized over every word he speaks, humiliated by the public to the point of disgrace, slandered, ridiculed, insulted, lied to/about, threatened with death, had his wife and our First Lady disrespected, & his minor child insulted, threatened & harassed.
I am ashamed and saddened by the ruthless, meanspirited, hateful, cruel, biased people who display themselves as having no civic pride, morals, ethics, decency or respect for our country's traditions and values. My elders and teachers taught me many yrs ago to respect our President, whether I voted for them or not.
All the news stations & reporters who feel they have the right to perpetuate blatent lies and fabricate "facts" for a "good story" are dividing our country beyond belief. Many only report the negative "news" and never the accomplishments of our President. If people do not research everything put out by the MSM, they are left to believe all the hate mongering news. This is leading to so much intolerance that I feel we are nearing the brink of a civil war!
No other President that took the oath of office, has been on the news 24/7, scrutinized for their every word, facial expression, decision, handshake, what he eats...
NO, he is not perfect, far from it! No President or person is, including you and I!!!!! Yes, he makes stupid comments and doesn't use the flowery language of a "professional politician". However, I believe he truly loves the United States of America and works tirelessly to make things better for us all. He is very different than what we've become accustomed to, thank goodness.
The people who would rather see our country fail than help him do his job need to stop. I was always taught "If you can't be part of the solution then at least don't be part of the problem". I personally want our President Donald Trump, as I did his predecessors, to succeed. To hope for failure is INSANE.

Proposed Drawdown for Lake Martin and Excessive Plant Control Killing the Button Bush
If 'they' cared about Lake Martin they would stop draining it in September and spraying herbicide in the rookery during the restricted time frame that prohibits boats from being in the rookery!
The plants are not out of control @ Lake Martin, the LDWF Division of Aquatic Plant Control and Research is! Especially if they are going into the rookery to apply herbicide when the birds are nesting between January and July! And they have been doing that now for over 10 years!
This is nothing new as you can see if you read the article in the link below!
And for 20 years I have been protesting excessive application of herbicide which has resulted in hundreds of acres of Button Bush being wiped out on all four sides of the lake ...
and now for the last few years Louisiana Deptment of Wildlife and Fisheries has nothing else to spray, so they are going into the rookery even during the "restricted time" from February-July when boats are alledgedly prohibited from entering the rookery. But if there really is a law prohibiting access, show it to me!
Above is the blossum on a button Bush which is the preferred nesting site for egrets and herons in the rookery at Lake Martin. Below is a photo of me in 1997 by Brian Miller when I was doing swamp tours in the rookery as evidence that I do not disturb the nesting birds.
In my opinion the combination of an unwarranted drawdown of water by the Nature Conservancy through 'their' draingate on the southside by the visitor center and the excessive application of herbicide in the rookery by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Division of Aquatic Plant Research and Control is combined producing much more disturbance of the ecology than the nesting birds can tolerate and the result were are fewer birds nesting in 2017 than I have seen since the 'mysterious' disappearance of the nesting birds in 2006-2009.
